Netflix has recently announced a complete redesign of its main interface for television users, incorporating generative AI technology for the first time to enhance the accuracy of content recommendations and improve the search functionality of its mobile application. This update will be rolled out globally in phases, offering users an upgraded experience.
The new design relocates the main menu of the television interface from the left side of the screen to the top, and introduces a new My Netflix tab that consolidates the user's A List of My Favorite Films, currently watched content, previously viewed or saved works, and user-customized reminders. Netflix aims to simplify navigation in this way, enabling users to find content that suits them more quickly.
The main interface has undergone significant changes, moving away from the previous method that only displayed a single recommended content. It has now been enhanced to include key labels such as award records and popular rankings, along with brief content summaries, allowing viewers to quickly grasp the features of the programs.
The recommendation system has been upgraded to consider a wider range of variables. Utilizing Netflix's proprietary algorithms, it analyzes user data such as viewing history, preferred genres, playback times, language preferences, and devices to determine the content that aligns best with individual tastes. These algorithms are trained by the Netflix team, with foundational support from OpenAI's technology in the U.S.
In addition to changes in the TV interface, Netflix is testing a brand new mobile search experience. iOS users will be the first to experience a more intuitive way to search; by simply entering Interested in checking out some fun and laid-back shows?, the system will recommend related content. This search feature also leverages generative AI to enhance language comprehension, allowing users to find the content they need more efficiently.
Another brand new testing feature for the mobile app is a vertical short video preview, similar to TikTok, allowing users to scroll up and down to view different clips. They can instantly choose to play or add them to their personal playlist. Netflix hopes this intuitive operation will entice more users to explore new content.
