Discover the luxury AVATR electric SUVs by Changan Automobile with innovative design and impressive performance

AVATR is the luxury sub-brand of Changan Automobile, which is one of the four major automotive groups in China (the others being FAW, Dongfeng, and SAIC). Its roots can be traced back to 1862 when Li Hongzhang established the Shanghai Foreign Gun Factory, but it wasn’t until 1983, 121 years later, that it officially began producing civilian vehicles. As for AVATR itself, it was established in 2018, with its first model, the 11, officially launched in 2022, making its debut in Hong Kong just last year. The 07 model we tested is set to launch in September 2024, and it will officially export to Hong Kong in less than two years!

As mentioned earlier, the 11 was the first model unveiled by Avita, followed by the releases of the 12, 07, and 06. In between, they also introduced two limited editions designed in collaboration with Givenchy and Dior/Fendi: the 011 and 012. Among these, the 11/011 and 07 belong to the SUV category, while the 12/012 and 06 are sedan versions. In other words, the current models available in Hong Kong are both SUVs: the 11 and the 07. The 07 closely resembles the 11 in terms of shape and design, so if you aren’t familiar with them, you might easily mistake them for the same vehicle. However, the easiest way to differentiate them is by noting that the 11 has a narrower rear window and a flatter trunk lid, whereas the 07 has a more traditional hatchback SUV design.

Additionally, this test drive features electronic rearview mirrors on both sides. I know they help to reduce wind resistance and enhance overall visibility, but getting used to them requires some adjustment. Besides cutting down on excessive head movements, I have to re-evaluate the distance between the car and the outside world. However, with the screens positioned on either side of the dashboard, this setup is already a significant improvement over other models that use similar electronic mirrors, eliminating the need for constant searching. I believe I’ll get the hang of it quickly once I adapt. Speaking of adaptation, I have to mention that the oval steering wheel of the 07 is stylish but not very practical. Especially during turns or parking maneuvers, it becomes apparent how awkward it feels. Since the electronic mirrors claim that additional installation isn’t a concern, could I possibly switch back to a standard round steering wheel?

Though the steering wheel may be a bit tricky to handle and the electronic rearview mirror takes some getting used to, the layout of the cabin in the 2007 model is quite appealing. The deep purple nappa leather is incredibly soft to the touch, and the seats provide excellent support. You wouldn’t expect that even the driver’s seat has a footrest—could it be used as a bed when charging? With a wheelbase close to 3 meters, once you’ve adjusted the driving position, there’s plenty of space for the backseat passengers to stretch out comfortably. Plus, the area below the triangular rear window is designed with a curved shape, making it easy for passengers to sit sideways without any issue.

As for the 07 model that just arrived in Hong Kong, it comes in two versions, both equipped with an 82.16 kWh battery. One features a rear-wheel drive with a single motor, while the other boasts an all-wheel drive with dual motors. Of course, we test drove the top-tier all-wheel drive version. Before April 1st, the early bird price for a 1-for-1 exchange is under 370,000, and whether this price is considered expensive or reasonable is subjective. However, when compared to the 11 model, it’s already seen as Friendly.

Although it looks massive from the outside, it handles surprisingly well. The challenge lies in getting accustomed to the electronic rearview mirror’s visibility, as the screen’s elongated shape is designed to fit the dashboard. When you’re not used to it, you’ll need to leave extra space when changing lanes. With nearly 600 horsepower and 645Nm of torque, acceleration increases rapidly with the throttle position. However, its response isn’t as exaggeratedly sudden as in some electric cars, which can be a bit overwhelming for first-time electric vehicle users and rear-seat passengers. This tuning, which resembles traditional gas vehicles, offers a more user-friendly experience. On the regenerative braking front, there are three levels to choose from, with zero being the most ideal. After testing, I found that the middle level seems best for everyday driving—it provides a gentle regenerative feel without much noticeable tugging, requiring less force to brake than both the zero setting and the strongest mode, showing significantly better performance. As for the all-wheel-drive version equipped with air suspension, while it doesn’t quite reach the level of Magic Carpet, it does outperform competitors in handling road imperfections. It offers ample support in continuous curves, able to stabilize the nearly 2.5-ton body, and since the vehicle height isn’t too tall, it maintains a lower center of gravity compared to other SUVs, yielding a commendable performance!
