In the latest race in Qatar, featuring fierce competition over 57 laps, this year's championship landscape has dramatically shifted once again. Max Verstappen, through clever strategy from Red Bull, surged from third place to the top of the podium as the champion. Oscar Piastri closely followed. Meanwhile, Lando Norris faced strategic issues, hindered by other cars on the track, preventing him from securing a top-three finish and leaving him to settle for fourth place. Now, the lead that was initially 22 points has shrunk to just 12 points, and the identity of this year's champion will be revealed in the final race in Abu Dhabi!
In this race, the early presence of the Safety Car and the Pirelli tire restrictions for 25 laps forced every team to adapt their strategies. McLaren chose to let Piastri and Norris extend the first segment of the race, and while they managed to maintain P2, they gave Verstappen a significant advantage in terms of race pace and pit stop timing. After the second tire change, Norris unfortunately got hit by Carlos Sainz and Kimi Antonelli, costing him valuable time, until the second-to-last lap when he finally capitalized on Antonelli's mistake for a breakthrough. However, by then, it was already impossible to catch the top three, making this year's competition incredibly tight.
Sainz continues to shine, standing out as one of the key highlights at Williams this season, once again securing a P3 finish. Meanwhile, Antonelli from Mercedes crossed the line in P5, paving the way for the team to clinch the runner-up spot this season. Fernando Alonso, representing Aston Martin, impressively finished at P7 after executing a stunning 360-degree spin, showcasing the resilience of a seasoned veteran. Other points positions were claimed by Leclerc, Lawson, and Tsunoda. During the race, Nico Hulkenberg and Gasly had a collision in the first lap, forcing both to retire from the competition; meanwhile, Isack Hadjar suffered a tire puncture at the end of the race, losing his previously stable P6 position. Despite the chaos, the thrilling race kept the spotlight firmly on the fierce competition between the top three teams this year.
In the final showdown set to take place in Abu Dhabi, the point difference among three racers—Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri—is a mere 12 and 16 points, keeping the competition wide open. In this race, Verstappen displayed remarkable composure and superior rhythm control, managing to capitalize on the race conditions even when in a less advantageous position. Although Norris expressed dissatisfaction with a fourth-place finish, upon reflection, he recognized that McLaren's failure in this race stemmed from misjudgments rather than a lack of speed. The race in Abu Dhabi is poised to be a dual psychological and strategic challenge, marking a decisive moment for all three drivers.
