To enhance driving convenience and traffic safety in Hong Kong, the Transport and Logistics Bureau has announced that eligible vehicles approved by the Transport Department can now officially adopt remote parking functionality. Owners no longer need to be inside the vehicle; they can operate the vehicle to enter or exit parking spaces from outside using devices like smartphones or key fobs. This feature is especially suitable for narrow parking environments, making parking much easier. The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Frankie Chan, pointed out that this technology meets the needs of drivers and is sure to be welcomed by many motorists.
Once the vehicles equipped with this remote parking feature are approved, drivers can easily control the parking process through a mobile device. This technology is specifically designed for tight parking spaces, allowing drivers to operate from a short distance after exiting the vehicle, ensuring they have full control over the vehicle’s situation at all times. The Transport Department has established clear technical guidelines and application processes, and vehicle owners can inquire about eligible models with their dealers or importers. The insurance industry has also shown general acceptance of the approved systems, so owners don’t need to worry about insurance issues.
In addition to the remote parking feature, the government has also eased restrictions on using the car’s display during parking. Once the driver has parked the vehicle and engaged the handbrake, they can flexibly use the display to send and receive messages or watch videos, even while charging the electric vehicle or waiting at a gas station. This not only meets practical needs but also adheres to safety requirements.
