When you mention the Dakar Rally, the first images that come to mind are the endless deserts, massive trucks, rugged off-road vehicles, and motorbikes—sometimes even the iconic Land Rover. However, it’s important to note that the manufacturer has never participated in this event as an official team. On the contrary, the equally grueling Camel Trophy is where the brand truly made its mark, as this competition has required Land Rovers to compete since the mid-1980s. This often leads to confusion between the two events, with many mistakenly believing they are the same, but they are distinctly different!

Before diving into the details about the Defender participating in the Dakar Rally this time, let’s share a bit more information. The Defender has now become an independent brand (alongside Range Rover and Discovery, which are also independent brands), no longer just a model under Land Rover. This move aims to provide them with clearer positioning in the market—Range Rover focuses on the ultra-luxury segment, Discovery caters to practical family buyers, while the Defender stays true to its rugged off-road spirit. So, using it for the Dakar Rally is just perfect!

The Defender D7X-R, a race car designed for the Dakar Rally, is a modified version of the Defender OCTA. It retains the original gearbox, transmission system, and the powerful 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine. However, to meet the rigorous demands of racing scene, it has undergone significant upgrades. These include a specialized suspension developed in collaboration with Bilstein, allowing it to handle various jumping challenges. Additionally, a feature called Flight Mode was introduced, enabling the vehicle to land smoothly after bouncing across the dunes without damaging the transmission system. The braking system has also been upgraded to a high-performance specification, featuring six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear to tackle sudden emergencies. In terms of design, it utilizes the long body of the Defender 100, but the wheelbase has been extended by 60mm, and the body has been raised slightly to increase ground clearance. It also comes equipped with 35-inch tires.
