In today's market, dominated by heavy electric vehicles, British startup Longbow is driving a revolution focused on vehicle lightweighting. Their latest launch in London's Brixton area, the Longbow Speedster, isn’t just a figment of design; it’s a real, drivable Featherweight Electric Vehicle (FEV) that pays homage to the legendary engineer Colin Chapman’s philosophy of lightweight design.
The Longbow Speedster boasts a dry weight of just around 1,970 pounds (approximately 895 kilograms), making it about 1,200 pounds lighter than the modern fuel-powered sports car, the Lotus Emira. Despite its lightweight design, it still offers an impressive range of around 275 miles WLTP and accelerates to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds. As co-founder Daniel Davey puts it, What we want is not a lifeless model car, but a vibrant, genuine vehicle that truly embodies life. its agile performance is primarily attributed to the specially designed aluminum chassis and practical component choices. Longbow opts for high-quality off-the-shelf parts instead of spending years on in-house development.
Longbow's team is composed of professionals recruited from renowned companies like Tesla, Lucid, and Lotus, and with such a background, they managed to transform the Speedster from sketch to drivable prototype in just six months, a feat that takes traditional automakers three times longer. The Speedster is a limited edition with only 150 units handcrafted, priced at £84,995 (about $111,500). Looking ahead, Longbow also plans to launch a more affordable hardtop model named the Roadster, catering to the vast expectations from car enthusiasts for electric vehicles. For those car lovers eager to break free from the Heavy battery stereotype, Longbow clearly demonstrates that the future of electric vehicles can be lightweight, perfectly balanced, and still packed with driving joy.
