Porsche’s beloved sports car models, the Boxster and Cayman, are set to take their final bow as they gradually phase out their gasoline-powered variants. According to the latest official announcement, both models will cease production by the end of 2025, with the final units rolling off the assembly line in October 2025. While the last of the inventory may linger in the North American market into early 2026, production in Europe is expected to halt by mid-2024 in response to new regulations.
As times change, Porsche’s original plan to launch the next generation of the 718 Boxster and Cayman as fully electric models in 2026 has faced a setback, with the release of the electric versions now pushed back to at least 2027. This delay is primarily due to the technical challenges encountered in battery development, particularly concerning their collaboration with Swedish battery supplier Northvolt, which is currently facing bankruptcy risks.
In addition to supply chain challenges, the global market’s adoption rate of electric vehicles is falling short of expectations, impacting Porsche’s future plans as well. With the discontinuation of current fuel-powered models, Porsche’s sports car lineup is set to face a significant gap. It will be crucial for the industry to closely watch how they adjust their strategy moving forward.
