Aston Martin team principal Andy Cowell stated that he has not heard of Fernando Alonso’s plans regarding a possible retirement at the end of the 2026 season.
As a two-time world champion, Alonso has participated in 419 Formula 1 Grand Prix races, making him one of the most experienced drivers in F1 history. However, he has faced a winless streak in 218 races to date.
This 44-year-old driver is contemplating his future and recently expressed in the Spanish newspaper AS that if Aston Martin’s racing performance doesn’t improve by 2026, he might continue competing to wrap up his racing career on a high note. He mentioned, “I know this is my last chance. As we enter the new era of technology in 2026, if the racing performance isn’t up to par, I might race for another year.”
Cowell pointed out, “There hasn’t been any conversation about retirement between us. Over the past year, all our discussions have revolved around the 2026 season. We’re both fully committed and focused on 2026.” He added that the same applies to Linus Strahl, which makes the 2025 season quite challenging for the team.
Cowell also emphasized that Fernando’s competitiveness on the track is astonishing; age doesn’t seem to be a barrier for him, but rather an advantage.
Alonso has now become the oldest driver in F1 history since the 1975 Brazilian Grand Prix. He also holds the title of the oldest race leader, fastest lap creator, and podium finisher since 2011-2012.
