At the Singapore Grand Prix qualifying, the Mercedes team successfully fine-tuned their car settings, allowing George Russell to clinch pole position with a 0.182-second advantage over Max Verstappen. This race takes place at night, providing the teams with the opportunity to perfect their strategies in a highly challenging environment.
Due to the high temperatures and humidity in Singapore, the event issued a heat injury warning prior to the race, prompting teams to consider adding adjustable cooling systems for driver temperature management. Free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday were scheduled for the evening, allowing teams to fine-tune their cars and strategize for the finals.
During the second free practice session on Friday, Russell and Lawson brought out the red flags, hampering several teams from completing their scheduled runs. Despite Piastri clocking the fastest lap time of 1:30.714 in this session, that time lacks reference value. Alonso shone in the first free practice, but the other drivers from the Mercedes team fell behind due to adaptation issues.
The qualifying rounds are divided into three stages, with Q1 and Q2 eliminating the bottom five drivers. During this process, while Hamilton set the fastest lap in Q1, changes in track conditions hindered the performances of other drivers, leading to Bortoleto, Stroll, and others being among the first to be eliminated.
In Q2, Verstappen broke Hamilton’s record right from the start, instantly elevating the performances of several drivers to below 1 minute and 30.3 seconds. Leclerc made a mistake at Turn 14, ultimately finishing in 13th place and needing to inspect his vehicle. Meanwhile, Antonelli delivered an outstanding performance, clocking a time even faster than Verstappen’s, securing a fortunate advancement.
Entering Q3, Russell delivered an outstanding performance, clinching pole position with a time of 1:29.158. He will face off against Verstappen in the 62-lap final scheduled for 20:00 Taiwan time on the 5th. The drivers finishing in third to tenth places are Piastri, Antonelli, Norris, Hamilton, Leclerc, Hadjar, Bearman, and Alonso.
In this competition, both drivers from the Williams team were disqualified for rule violations and will need to restart from the pit lane. As the upcoming race approaches, the organizers remain anxious about the impact of the safety car, anticipating that the race will face multiple uncertainties.
