Tesla has recently announced the launch of the extended version of the Model Y L designed specifically for the Chinese market on Weibo, along with teaser photos showcasing the side and rear of the vehicle. This news has sparked exciting anticipation among tech and electric vehicle enthusiasts. According to the latest application data from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, this brand-new six-seat SUV model features a body length that has been increased by 17.9 centimeters compared to the standard Model Y, with a wheelbase that has grown by 15 centimeters, even surpassing the Model X. This illustrates Tesla's proactive response to the intensifying competition in the domestic SUV market.
The detailed dimensions of the Model Y L are 4,976 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,668 mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. Compared to the refreshed Model Y, this new vehicle has added 17.9 cm in length, 4.4 cm in height, and 15 cm in wheelbase. The design continues the basic silhouette of the Model Y, featuring a continuous light strip and a front face reminiscent of Iron Man. The rear design remains largely the same, with the most significant difference being the proportion of the vehicle, which notably enhances the seating space for third-row passengers.
While the American version of the Model Y offers a seven-seat option, the third row's knee room is quite cramped, making it difficult for adults to fit comfortably. However, the added 15 centimeters in the wheelbase of the Model Y L will significantly enhance the space in the third row, making it an ideal choice for accommodating adults comfortably.
In terms of powertrain configuration, the Model Y L features a dual motor system, with the front motor delivering a peak power of 142 kW and the rear motor at 198 kW. It is equipped with a ternary lithium battery from LG Energy Solution, has a curb weight of 2,088 kg, and can reach a top speed of 201 km/h.
In addition to the Model Y L, the announced documentation for the Model 3+ reveals a maximum power output of 225 kilowatts. It's rumored to be a long-range version with rear-wheel drive, specifically designed for the Chinese market, and will not be launched in other regions.
The launch of the Model Y L has sparked attention, as Tesla currently faces significant challenges in China. With the ongoing impacts of the US-China trade war, the Model X has ceased sales in the Chinese market, while competition from domestic SUVs has intensified, putting pressure on Tesla's sales. As of June this year, retail sales of the Model Y in China stood at 171,491 units, representing a year-on-year decline of 17.48%. In the face of competitors like NIO's Onvo L90 and Li Auto's i8 offering more competitively priced six-seat SUVs, Tesla is naturally looking to solidify its market position through the introduction of new products.
Although Tesla has yet to announce the specific price for the Model Y L, media sources generally predict it will be higher than the long-range version, estimated at around 400,000 RMB (approximately 432,000 HKD). In comparison to the pre-sale price of the Onvo L90 at 279,900 RMB, Tesla must strike a balance between product uniqueness and price competitiveness.
Currently, there are no reports indicating that the Model Y L will be launched outside of China, further demonstrating Tesla's focus on the demand in the Chinese market and their strategy of tailored customization.
