This morning (December 5), at 11 AM Japan time (10 AM Hong Kong time), Toyota held an announcement in Tokyo unveiling three sporty models. Yes, you heard that right, and I didn’t make a mistake; these are indeed sports cars—two street cars and one racing car—two fueled and one electric. The models include the GR (Gazoo Racing) GR GT, along with the modified GR GT presented as the GR GT3 racing car, and the Lexus LFA Concept.

    GR GT

The GR GT, representing the Gazoo Racing (GR) brand, is a testament to Toyota’s hard work and dedication, with efforts fueled by a team of professional drivers such as Kataka Tatsuya, Ishira Hiroaki, and Kamu Natsuki, in collaboration with Toyota Akio and Toyota Daisuke, the father-son duo who are passionate about motorsports. Designed to be a race car that can also be driven on public roads, the primary focus was on lowering the center of gravity, reducing weight, and achieving high performance.

To achieve a lower center of gravity, the height of the vehicle must be minimized as much as possible. The drive system features a front-engine layout with rear-wheel drive, and the new 8-speed transmission is positioned above the rear axle, ensuring a more balanced power distribution (45% front and 55% rear). Additionally, the driveshaft is constructed from carbon fiber, which optimizes the center of gravity even further. As can be seen in the image below, the driver’s seat and the engine are located in the same area, fulfilling the fundamental requirements for integration between the driver and the vehicle. Regarding the drive structure, a new hybrid formula has been adopted, utilizing a 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces over 650 horsepower, with a torque of 850 Newton-meters, and a top speed exceeding 320 km/h.

Toyota is making significant investments in weight management, as the vehicle’s structure is entirely made from aluminum alloys for the first time. In specific areas of the chassis, such as the roof, hood, inside the doors, and the rear of the car, carbon fiber has been utilized to meet demands for lightweight and durability. The result is that the weight management of the GR GT keeps it under 1.8 tons – precisely 1,750 kg.

    GR GT3

The GR GT3, produced with GR GT specifications, is known to be suitable for both professional and amateur drivers. It features mechanical specifications identical to the GR GT, with a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and rear-wheel drive. It is expected to be officially launched in 2027, similar to the GR GT.

    Lexus LFA Concept

As for the Lexus (Ling Chi) LFA Concept, it’s the sporty version that was previously showcased during the Monterey Car Week. The production version is expected to carry the name LFA. This time, the manufacturer has indicated that this car will be an electric sports vehicle, contrary to what most believed before, thinking it would run on fuel; there was an impression that the elongated front meant it had to be fuel-powered, but it turns out it’s electric after all. Even though the design of the LFA Concept is pretty much finalized, its electrical specifications haven’t been revealed yet. We believe more detailed information will come as we get closer to the production phase, but when will production actually begin? The manufacturer hasn’t mentioned anything in this regard, and we hope this isn’t just a mirage.
