This morning (December 5), at 11:00 Japanese time (10:00 Hong Kong time), Toyota unveiled three sports car models in Tokyo. You heard that right, and I’m not mistaken either; these are indeed sports cars: two street models and one racing model; two fueled by gasoline and one electric. The models are the flagship of GR (Gazoo Racing): the GR GT, along with the GR GT3 that is launched under the name GR GTModification, and the Lexus LFA Concept.

GR GT

As the flagship of Gazoo Racing (GR), the GR GT is a masterpiece from Toyota, brought to life by a talented team of brand drivers including Tatsuya Kataoka, Hiroaki Ishiura, and Naoya Gamou, alongside motorsport enthusiast Akio Toyoda and his son Daisuke Toyoda. The vision behind its creation is to engineer a race car that can legally cruise the streets, meaning a low center of gravity, lightweight build, and high performance are its primary development conditions.

To achieve a low center of gravity, minimizing the height of the chassis is crucial. The propulsion system employs a front-engine and rear-wheel drive design, and the new 8-speed transmission is positioned over the rear axle, allowing for a more balanced power distribution (45% at the front and 55% at the rear). Additionally, the driveshaft is made from carbon fiber, further enhancing the center of gravity. In the image below, you can see that the driver’s seat and the engine are positioned in the same spot, thus meeting the basic integration requirements between the driver and the vehicle. Regarding the power configuration, a new 4-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine is utilized, delivering a maximum power of over 650 horsepower and a torque of 850 Nm, reaching a top speed of more than 320 km/h.

Toyota has made significant investments in weight control, incorporating aluminum throughout the chassis structure for the first time. Specific parts of the vehicle’s body, such as the roof, hood, door interiors, and rear, are crafted from carbon fiber elements to achieve the perfect balance between lightness and strength. As a result, the weight control of the GR GT remains below 1.8 tons, tipping the scales at 1,750 kg.

GR GT3

The GR GT3, presented under the specifications of the GR GT Modification, is a race car designed for both professional and amateur drivers. Its mechanics are identical to those of the GR GT, featuring a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and a rear-wheel drive (FR) layout. Like the GR GT, this model is expected to be officially launched in 2027.

Lexus LFA Concept
Regarding the Lexus LFA Concept, this is the Sport Concept version that was previously showcased at Monterey Car Week, and it’s anticipated that it will eventually go into production under the name LFA. Furthermore, the brand has made it clear that this vehicle is electric, contradicting the expectations of many who believed that its long hood indicated it was a gasoline car. Ultimately, it has been confirmed to be an electric vehicle. While the design of the LFA Concept boasts a high level of finish, its electric specifications have yet to be disclosed. More information is expected as we approach the production phase. When will production begin? The company has not mentioned anything about it, and we hope this isn’t just a pipe dream.
