This morning (December 5), at 11 AM Japan time (10 AM Hong Kong time), Toyota officially unveiled three sports cars in Tokyo. Yes, you heard that right, and I’m not mistaken—it’s definitely sports cars: two street models and one racing car; two gasoline-powered and one electric. They include the flagships from GR (Gazoo Racing): the GR GT, the GR GT3 racing car launched with GR GTModification, and the Lexus LFA Concept.

    GR GT

As the flagship of Gazoo Racing (GR), the GR GT is a testament to Toyota’s dedication and hard work, crafted through a collaboration of renowned Toyota drivers like Tatsuya Kataoka, Hiroaki Ishiura, and Naoya Gamou, alongside the racing enthusiasts Akio Toyoda and his son Daisuke Toyoda. Their mission was to create a race car that could legally cruise on public roads, with a focus on a low center of gravity, lightweight design, and high performance being their top priorities.

To achieve a lower center of gravity, the vehicle’s height is minimized. It features an FR (front-engine, rear-wheel drive) layout, with a newly developed 8-speed transmission positioned above the rear axle, allowing for a more balanced power distribution (45% front, 55% rear). The driveshaft is made of carbon fiber, enhancing the ideal center of gravity. From the image below, you can see that the driver’s seat and the engine are aligned, fulfilling the fundamental requirement of driver-car unity. As for the powertrain setup, it utilizes a newly developed 4-liter V8 twin-turbo hybrid engine, producing over 650 horsepower and an impressive torque of 850Nm, with a top speed exceeding 320 km/h.

Toyota has invested heavily in controlling weight. For the first time, the entire chassis is made of aluminum alloy, while specific areas of the vehicle such as the roof, hood, inner walls of the doors, and rear end utilize carbon fiber components. This approach ensures that the body is both lightweight and sturdy, ultimately keeping the GR GT’s weight under 1.8 tons—specifically at 1,750 kg.

    GR GT3

The GR GT3 race car, built to the GR GT specifications Modification, is known to be suitable for both professional and amateur drivers. It shares the same mechanical specifications as the GR GT, featuring a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine and a rear-wheel drive layout. Like the GR GT, it is expected to officially launch in 2027.

    Lexus LFA Concept

As for the Lexus LFA Concept, it’s the Sport Concept version showcased earlier during Monterey Car Week, and it’s expected to be officially named LFA once it hits production. This time, the manufacturer has clarified that the vehicle is an electric sports car, contrary to popular belief that it would be gasoline-powered, as everyone assumed that a long hood meant it had to be a gas car. In the end, it turns out it’s electric. While the exterior design of the LFA concept is highly refined, its electrical specifications haven’t been disclosed yet. We’ll likely need to wait until we get closer to the production phase for clearer information. When will it go into production? The company hasn’t mentioned anything at all; let’s hope it isn’t just a mirage.
