This morning (December 5th), at 11 AM Japan time (10 AM Hong Kong time), Toyota unveiled three sports cars in Tokyo. Yes, you heard it right, and no, I didn’t make a mistake—they’re indeed sports cars, including two street models and one race car. Among them, two are gasoline-powered while one is electric. The trio includes the flagship GR GT from Gazoo Racing, the GR GT3 race car derived from the GR GT, and the Lexus LFA Concept.

GR GT

As the flagship of Gazoo Racing (GR), the GR GT truly represents the culmination of Toyota’s passion and expertise. This remarkable vehicle was crafted by a team of professional drivers including Tatsuya Katayama, Hiroaki Ishiura, and Naoya Gamou, alongside the race-loving Akio Toyoda and his son Daisuke Toyoda. The design philosophy behind it aims to create a race car that can be legally driven on public roads, which makes low center of gravity, lightweight construction, and high performance the top priorities in its development.

To achieve a lower center of gravity, we need to minimize the height of the vehicle body. In terms of the power system, it adopts a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a newly developed 8-speed transmission positioned above the rear axle, allowing for a more balanced power distribution (front 45, rear 55). Additionally, the driveshaft is made of carbon fiber, enhancing the ideal center of gravity. As shown in the image below, the driver’s seat and the engine are aligned, fulfilling the fundamental requirement of uniting the driver and the vehicle. Regarding power output, it features a brand-new 4-liter V8 twin-turbo hybrid setup, delivering over 650 horsepower and achieving a torque of 850Nm, with a top speed exceeding 320 km/h.

Toyota is making significant strides in weight control by investing heavily in its construction. For the first time, the entire frame is made from aluminum, while specific parts of the body, like the roof, hood, inner door panels, and rear, utilize carbon fiber materials. This combination allows for a design that is both lightweight and sturdy, resulting in the GR GT weighing in at an impressive 1.8 tons or below—specifically, 1,750 kg.

GR GT3

The GR GT3 race car, modified to meet the GR GT specifications, is said to be suitable for both professional and amateur drivers. It features the same mechanical specifications as the GR GT, equipped with a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine and an FR rear-wheel-drive layout. It is expected to be officially launched in 2027.

Lexus LFA Concept
As for the Lexus LFA concept car, it is essentially the production version of the Sport Concept showcased earlier at the Monterey Car Week, and it’s expected that the final production model will be named LFA. Additionally, the company has clearly announced that this will be an electric sports car, contrary to initial speculation that it would be gas-powered; many assumed that a car with a long hood had to be a traditional combustion engine vehicle, but it turns out to be electric. Although the exterior of the LFA concept car is highly refined, its electrical specifications have not yet been disclosed, and we likely won’t get clearer information until we approach the production stage. As for when production will commence? The manufacturer has remained tight-lipped about this, and let’s hope this isn’t just a mirage.
