Apple is currently focused on enhancing its smart assistant, Siri. Reports indicate that the company has reached out to OpenAI and Anthropic, aiming to integrate more powerful AI technologies to boost Siri’s capabilities. It is said that Apple plans to start testing this upgraded version by mid-2025, but the integration work is still in its early stages.
In recent months, Apple has been working hard to revamp Siri with AI enhancements, appointing Mike Rockwell, who is in charge of Vision Pro, to directly manage AI and Siri for the first time, replacing former head John Giannandrea. Rockwell is urging the team to test models such as Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini, in order to compare their performance in handling basic requests. Reports suggest that Anthropic shows the most promising potential.
According to reports, Apple is considering sourcing technology for the new version of Siri from Anthropic or OpenAI, rather than relying on its own internal models. Discussions with these companies revolve around how to train large language models that can be tested on Apple’s cloud infrastructure. Apple has requested these companies to develop custom versions that can run on its private cloud, with testing plans set to kick off in mid-2025. The goal is to bridge the gap between Siri and competitors like Google Gemini or ChatGPT in the market.
If these partnerships are established, the integration of Siri is expected to kick off by the end of 2026. However, Apple is also continuously developing its internal foundational models. One of the challenges Apple faces is figuring out how to integrate third-party AI models while maintaining its strict user privacy standards. As a company renowned for its commitment to user privacy, Apple’s data processing methods will be under scrutiny.
