According to the latest news, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is set to debut by the end of 2026 or early 2027, with a projected price tag of up to $2,500 (approximately HK$19,500). This phone focuses on AI experiences and features a seamless 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display, crafted with a titanium body and a brand new foldable hinge design.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed out that the highlight of this new device is its large screen, which allows for interactive multitasking across applications. For instance, users can discuss their itinerary with a chatbot while viewing a full map. Additionally, Touch ID is making a comeback in the form of a side button, replacing Face ID, aimed at saving internal space.
The new device features a book-style foldable design, with a thickness of about 9.5mm when folded and a slim profile of just 4.5mm to 4.8mm when opened up. The seamless technology is a major selling point of this smartphone, and reports indicate that Apple has successfully developed new materials to address this technical challenge. The device employs a composite material hinge made of stainless steel and titanium alloy, making it both durable and lightweight.
In terms of photography, this device features a dual rear camera system, with each screen equipped with a camera aimed at enhancing video calls and selfies. Its battery technology is similar to that of the iPhone 17 Air, utilizing high-density cells to meet the demands of a larger screen and AI processing.
The focus of the foldable iPhone is on the AI experience, enhancing user efficiency through multimodal technology and cross-application interaction. For instance, users can engage with an AI assistant while simultaneously checking maps and recommended itineraries during travel planning. Apple aims for this product to be a truly AI-driven smartphone, targeting the high-end AI smartphone market.
Ming-Chi Kuo forecasts that the final specifications for the foldable iPhone will be finalized in the second quarter of 2025, but mass production won’t begin until the fourth quarter of 2026 due to the challenges in initial production. The shipment volume for 2026 is expected to be only between 3 to 5 million units. By 2027, Apple plans to accelerate the production pace, with the second generation of the foldable iPhone expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2027, potentially reaching a total shipment volume of 20 million units for the year.
Despite the steep price of the foldable iPhone, as a premium product from Apple, coupled with AI, seamless display technology, and top-notch hardware specifications, the market expects to draw in a significant number of loyal Apple fans and high-end consumers. Even though Apple’s stock price has recently been affected by market fluctuations, analysts believe that the launch of this new product will help solidify its leading position in the high-end smartphone market.
