What do you expect to see when you tear open the packaging of gift? Korean designer Matin Kim provides a philosophical answer: a mirror. His second collaboration with CASETiFY distills this concept into the core design of the Paper Case, where the white paper is ripped apart, revealing not a product, but your own face at the tear. This design transforms Unboxing from a one-time action into a continuous experience, allowing you to encounter yourself every time you pick up your phone, right through that torn gap.

The Physical Existence of Torn Paper Effects

The paper case’s tear effect is far from just flat printing. The white paper surface is crafted from a composite material of TPU and PC, featuring irregular textures along the edges that have been precisely molded, allowing for a subtly tactile experience when your fingers glide over it. Beneath the tear, the reflective surface is coated with polished metal, ensuring clarity in reflection while minimizing the risk of glass shattering. The silver logo subtly appears beneath the mirrored layer, reminiscent of a brand identity faintly visible through wrapping paper. This multi-layered structure creates a sense of dimensional visual depth, synchronizing touch with sight.

The entire series is centered around Unboxing Ceremony. The Tape Case recreates the translucent sheen of packing tape, rhythmically featuring the brand’s logo in a repeating pattern; the Denim Circle Case condenses the twill texture of denim, worn gradients, and stitching details into the surface of the protective cover. Everyday packaging materials like paper, tape, and fabric are transformed into objects that can be touched repeatedly and carried daily. As you glide your phone through the MTR carriage, the moment your fingertips brush against the torn edge of the paper becomes a miniature ritual of anticipation.

    Self-Gazing in the Mirror

Mirrors have long been a crucial tool in psychology for self-recognition. Paper Case cleverly conceals the reflective surface beneath a tear, creating a subtle viewing scenario: instead of actively using a mirror to do makeup, you unexpectedly encounter your own face during the everyday action of using your phone. Research shows that mirror meditation can permanently alter self-perception, with participants discovering their true selves or even experiencing complete self-dissolution after consistent practice. While Paper Case may not have intentionally set out to be a meditation tool, it indeed offers a constant interface for self-observation.

The imagery of tearing paper embodies a tension between revelation and exposure. When the surface is ripped apart, what emerges is the viewer themselves, creating a philosophical cycle: you think you’re unwrapping a package to find its contents, but the contents are, in fact, you seeking yourself. This accidental self-examination often elicits a more genuine reaction than simply looking in a mirror; what you see is an unprepared, unretouched version of yourself. As you wait for friends on the bustling streets of Mong Kok, pulling out your phone reveals not just your face in the reflection, but also the flowing shadows of neon signs in the background.

The Balance of Functionality and Aesthetics

From a functional perspective, the mirror design enhances everyday convenience. Touching up makeup, checking one’s appearance, or using it as a reflector to tweak that perfect selfie angle along Victoria Harbour are all practical scenarios. However, user feedback points out the downsides: the mirror is prone to scratches and easily shows fingerprints, and the reflections can be distracting in bright light. CASETiFY adheres to military-grade drop protection standards, featuring a raised edge design that safeguards the screen and camera, while MagSafe compatibility ensures that magnetic accessories work seamlessly.

The other designs in the collection are equally worth exploring. The Unboxing Case comes in black and pink, featuring printed details that mimic the aesthetics of an unboxing experience. The Postbox Case integrates elements of mail tags, while the Paper Cardholder Stand combines a tear-paper pattern with the functionality of a card holder. The Charm Keychain Set, made up of five custom charms, boasts a vintage metallic finish, elevating the accessories to fashionable statements. Priced between HKD 319 and HKD 549, this series has seen a market response that matches the rapid sell-out of the first collaboration, proving that Matin Kim’s minimalist aesthetic continues to captivate those who seek distinction while avoiding excessive embellishment.

    Release Information

The collection officially launched on January 12, 2026, at casetify.com, CASETiFY Studio stores, and Matin Kim stores, compatible with the iPhone 16 and the latest iPhone 17 series. The brand is also rolling out a Lunar New Year campaign; from January 26 to February 16, customers spending over HKD 1,388 at Hong Kong stores will receive a limited-edition red envelope set. The seven designs include the Paper Case, Unboxing Case (in black and pink), Denim Circle Case, Tape Case, Postbox Case, Paper Cardholder Stand, and Charm Keychain Set, each transforming the texture of everyday packaging materials into a tangible visual language.

Next time you use a Paper Case, take a moment to notice that moment when it tears open. What you’re seeing is not just a phone case; it’s a metaphor about self, about expectation, about reality and illusion. In the gap of the tear, you can glimpse your present self and how you’re interacting with the world right now.
