Microsoft is making bold strides toward a password-free future—a groundbreaking move that not only boosts user security but also ushers in a new era for login methods. The company began supporting passwordless Windows logins years ago and has allowed users to remove passwords entirely. Now, newly registered accounts will default to more secure options, such as passkeys, push notifications, and security keys, eliminating the traditional password system altogether.
To align with this passwordless initiative, Microsoft has also introduced an optimized login window design. The redesigned steps aim to create a password-free, passkey-first experience. Existing users can choose to retain their passwords, but new users will no longer be required to set a password during the registration process, seamlessly blending security with convenience.
The company stated: Existing users can easily navigate to the settings page to delete their passwords.
In addition, Microsoft has renamed World Password Day to World Password Day and pledged to promote the use of passkeys more vigorously within the next year. According to the company, they register nearly 1 million passkeys daily, with a 98% login success rate among passkey users—far surpassing the 32% success rate of traditional password accounts.
