When it comes to smartphones, the Sony brand has gradually faded from users’ perspectives in recent years, mainly because its device designs haven’t changed much over the past few years, and it has only introduced a handful of new features annually, resulting in a loss of many young supporters. However, recent rumors suggest that the upcoming Xperia VII will feature significant upgrades in its camera department. Will this upgrade be enough to win back its former loyal fans?
The author specifically puts the words “big upgrade” in quotation marks because, according to reports from Japanese media, this upgrade is crucial for the imaging quality of the new device’s camera. However, considering the rapid development of competitors in recent years, it may not be strong enough. Reports indicate that Sony will equip all three main lenses of the Xperia VII this year with Exmor T for mobile sensors, differing from the previous generation, where it was only used on the main camera. As we all know, Exmor T sensors help to expand the dynamic range of photos. When shooting in low-light conditions, they not only enhance imaging quality but also effectively reduce noise, resulting in clearer and more appealing images. The Xperia VI, launched last year, already showcased this effect, so if this sensor is applied to the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses this time, no matter which focal length, users can capture masterpieces comparable to those taken with mirrorless cameras.
However, the biggest question is that this update should have been implemented a year or two ago. After all, other competing brands have rapidly advanced their flagship models, many of which have enhanced camera performance through AI features to improve imaging quality. Now that Sony has finally launched this upgrade, the big question is how many old users will return? For photography enthusiasts, this upgrade is definitely something to look forward to. All I can say is: better late than never!
