Japanese tokusatsu films often depict scenes of gigantic monsters wreaking havoc in cities, followed by the appearance of defense teams to confront them. The new release ROLLA, developed by independent producer Heikki Sillanpää, shares a similar storyline, allowing players to embody the monstrous side as they amusingly demolish cities and battle against the military, ultimately overcoming human defenses.
This top-down horror action game blends survival destruction, dual-stick shooting, and collection elements reminiscent of Katamari. Players will take control of a creature named ROLLA, continuously growing by devouring, as they gradually uncover the true identity and origins of ROLLA.
The gameplay of ROLLA is similar to that of Katamari, utilizing a devouring method for growth. Players must roll, prey on creatures, and consume buildings to increase their size, but they need to be cautious of enemy attacks, or they risk shrinking. The smaller ROLLA's size, the faster it moves; conversely, a larger size allows it to withstand more attacks and destroy bigger objects, but it also makes it an easier target for aerial strikes. Human resistance escalates as the game progresses, even deploying tanks and other heavy weaponry to fight back.
Additionally, ROLLA comes with sprinting capabilities and long-range capturing skills, allowing players to unlock various enhancements and mutations as they progress through different stages. The game environments span across the globe, with each level presenting unique challenges—some are easy to achieve, while others are more secretive and demanding, often featuring special missions.
Currently, ROLLA is still in development, and the specific release date has not yet been determined. It is expected to launch on the PC Steam platform.
