Sony has recently released a beta version of the PlayStation 5 system update, introducing the highly anticipated multiple device pairing feature for the DualSense wireless controllers. This innovative function allows both DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers to remain paired with up to four devices simultaneously. Players can seamlessly switch between their PS5, PC, Mac, and mobile devices without the need to re-pair.
The new system features a simple key combination switch mechanism. Users need to ensure that the target device is powered on, then simultaneously press and hold the PS button on the controller along with the corresponding action button (triangle, circle, cross, or square) for more than 3 seconds. When the controller’s light bar starts flashing, release the buttons to complete the switch. Each device corresponds to a specific action button, and the player indicator lights on the controller will also display which button is currently in use.
When users first pair a new device, they need to ensure that the controller light bar and player indicator light are turned off. Then, by holding down one of the action buttons along with the PS button for more than 5 seconds, they can enter pairing mode. Shuuzou Kikuchi, Vice President of Product Management at Sony, mentioned that the DualSense controller already supports various devices beyond the PS5, and this update will significantly enhance the flexibility and smoothness of cross-platform gaming.
This new feature is particularly designed for gamers who frequently switch between different platforms, allowing users to easily switch their PS5 game controller to their PC for computer gaming, or connect it to their smartphones to enjoy the PS5 Remote Play function. This innovation addresses the long-standing trouble of cumbersome pairing, further enhancing the convenience of multi-device gaming.
This technology supports all Bluetooth-enabled devices compatible with DualSense. Sony has also provided a comprehensive list of compatible devices and operating system versions on its official website, allowing users to understand the support status of their devices. Currently confirmed supported devices include PlayStation 5, Windows PC, macOS, iOS, and Android devices.
In addition, the release schedule for the beta version indicates that this system update beta is exclusively available to invited users in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, aligning with Sony’s previous beta release practices. Test users will receive download codes soon, allowing them to be among the first to experience this new feature.
As for the official release timeline, while a specific date hasn’t been confirmed yet, Sony has stated that it will roll out this feature to global users in the coming months. Users will need to update the firmware of their controllers through their PlayStation consoles to enable the multi-device switching feature. There’s still no further news on whether the PSVR2 Sense controllers will also gain this functionality.
