Sony has recently been reported to be secretly developing the brand-new PS6 series, which includes the launch of an all-new portable gaming console. According to market analysis, the performance of this portable console may not necessarily match the current PS5 level. Sony aims to strike a balance between portability and performance, targeting specific users with this product.
According to insider sources, this yet-to-be-unveiled portable console will feature a 3nm SoC processor with a TDP of 15W. This information comes from NeoGaf user KeplerL2, who has previously accurately predicted that Sony was developing two dedicated SoCs for the PS6. He mentioned this new consoleFully capable of running PS5 games, though due to its lower memory bandwidth, both image quality and frame rate may be impacted. He emphasized that the main focus of this handheld will be on optimizing image resolution and ensuring smooth performance.
KeplerL2 stated that, in terms of overall performance, this PS6 handheld console is expected to fall somewhere between the Xbox Series S and PS5. However, he also mentioned that this is merely speculative, as the handheld utilizes a GPU architecture that has yet to be released, leaving its exact performance open to variables.
Mainstream portable consoles like the Steam Deck currently have a TDP set at 15W, which can be adjusted further depending on usage to extend battery life. In comparison, the PS5 console has a TDP of 200W, highlighting the significant performance gap between the two. This suggests that Sony is aiming to develop a gaming solution more suited to mobile environments.
Although Sony has yet to provide any official response or confirmation regarding the portable PS6 console, the market remains in a wait-and-see mode, anticipating more reliable updates or official announcements. If this handheld device eventually launches, it is expected to compete directly with models like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally in the market.
