Hollywood fans have been eagerly awaiting the reunion of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as they team up once again in Netflix’s latest crime thriller The Rip. The film’s trailer has just been officially released, showcasing the high stakes and intense plot that plunges viewers straight into the world of Miami’s underbelly.
Directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip draws inspiration from classic cop films of the 70s, like Serpico, while introducing the high-stakes moral dilemmas faced by contemporary society. The film centers on two main characters from a tactical drug enforcement unit—Lieutenant Dane Dumars, played by Damon, and Detective Sergeant JD Byrne, portrayed by Affleck—whose partnership is put to the ultimate test.
During a raid, they stumbled upon a cache of untraceable drug cash which initially seemed like a huge victory. However, things took a sharp turn as greed and distrust began to spread among the team. The looming threats from gangs and political forces drew closer, and the camaraderie they had once shared started to crack. The two found themselves questioning each other and keeping a wary eye on every one of their comrades.
This film not only showcases a powerful performance from the lead, but also features an all-star cast that includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler. With Carnahan’s signature directorial style and the script’s nuanced handling of the tension between Responsibilities and temptation, The Rip is set to become one of the most anticipated Netflix releases of the year, officially launching on January 16.
