Produced and honorably distributed by Emperor Motion Pictures and directed by Ng Ka Wai, the film Charge: Showdown brings together a stellar cast including Anthony Wong, Danny Lee, Poon Chan Leung, and Andy On. The story unfolds around a series of armed robberies in the bustling district of Yau Tsim Mong in Hong Kong. One of the key scenes was shot on location on Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, transforming the usually crowded shopping street into an explosive battleground, delivering a powerful visual impact.

Director Ng Ka Wai insists on filming with real locations, firearms, and explosive effects. The team shut down roads in a bustling area for shooting, utilizing multiple explosive devices and special effects sparks to create an intense atmosphere filled with bullets flying everywhere. The released behind-the-scenes footage showcases a multi-angle setup with synchronized filming, featuring numerous extras and a crowd of onlookers that adds depth to the gunfight scenes. The street signs, shop windows, and clouds of smoke intertwine, allowing audiences to experience the shock up close on the big screen.

In Charge: Showdown, Zhang Jicong plays the fugitive Yuen Cheuk-lung, teaming up with the character Yuen Cheuk-moo, portrayed by An Zhi-jie, to form a notorious brotherhood of robbers as they return to Hong Kong to commit crimes. A standout scene features him brandishing a gun in a standoff in the bustling center of Tsim Sha Tsui. Zhang describes the experience of filming this intense gunfight in a real urban setting as both nerve-wracking and thrilling, noting that opportunities to perform such dramatic actions in large-scale productions are rare. The pressures of a genuine environment only enhance his immersion in the role, adding a fierce intensity to his every movement.

Playing the role of Cheung Ka Wo, a member of the Storm Squad Car 23, Chan Ka Lok also found the city shoot for this gunfight unforgettable. He candidly shared that during the street filming, there were many onlookers, and the atmosphere was electric, sending his adrenaline soaring. When his character needed to urgently warn passersby to avoid danger, that sense of urgency felt completely natural, making the emotions even more authentic. For actors, this kind of real-time pressure is the advantage of on-location shooting, allowing action sequences to transcend mere technical display and seep into the immediate urgency of their characters.

Veteran actor Fang Zhongxin takes on the role of the assault team leader Zheng Zhibin in the film. Having participated in productions of various scales over the years, he candidly expresses that while modern movie-making benefits from advanced computer-generated effects, the real vibrations, sounds, and flames produced by actual gunfire and explosions are still irreplaceable. Charge: Showdown emphasizes the use of practical effects, aiming to present the most direct sensory stimulation to the audience. From what we see on screen, the height of the explosion flames and the coverage of smoke have been meticulously calculated to ensure safety while also creating a realistic effect.

Andy On, who has participated in several large-scale action productions, expressed his admiration for the scale of the current scenes. He noted that filming such grand gunfight sequences in such a vast and realistic location requires significant resources and coordination, reflecting the production team’s commitment to the work. In the film, he and the character played by Philip Keung, the Yuan brothers, relentlessly close in on the police, engaging in multiple intense confrontations with the Car23 led by Eric Tsang, resulting in dense action sequences and a fast-paced rhythm.

The story unfolds in the Tsim Sha Tsui district, where a series of jewelry store heists creates a tense atmosphere, taking the community by storm. As investigator Zheng Zhibin delves into the case, he uncovers that his adversaries are not just ordinary robbers; instead, they are fugitives from a notorious armed robbery that took place years ago. With the reappearance of the Yuen brothers, Yuen Cheuk Lung and Yuen Cheuk Wu, the shadows of the past loom large, stirring up old memories intertwined with the Zhang family’s history. This confrontation goes beyond mere gunfire; it’s a battle of wits and psychological warfare.

From real-life street gunfights to intense close-quarter battles, Charge: Showdown creates an atmosphere of tension through abundant raw footage, transforming Hong Kong’s familiar urban landscape into a battleground rife with danger. As the neon lights of Tsim Sha Tsui’s Granville Road intertwine with explosive flashes, the rhythm of the city clashes with the sound of gunfire, allowing audiences to confront this high-stakes showdown on the big screen.
