As we approach the 20th anniversary of “Constantine,” fans’ anticipation for a sequel seems to be skyrocketing. Recently, director Francis Lawrence and actor Keanu Reeves shared some exciting news on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, officially confirming that DC has greenlit the development of “Constantine 2,” with the script nearing completion.
Francis Lawrence has revealed that Akiva Goldsman is responsible for writing the script, and he along with Keanu Reeves are involved in the creation process. The team currently has some “exciting ideas” and is full of confidence regarding the sequel’s development. Moreover, he stated that “Constantine 2” will not belong to the DC universe managed by James Gunn, but will be categorized as “Elseworlds,” allowing this sequel to maintain its unique atmosphere and style.
Despite this, Francis Lawrence has pointed out that there are many challenges currently facing the development process, particularly due to internal decision-making changes within the studio, which have forced DC’s darker characters, including John Constantine, to be put on hold for a long time.
However, Keanu Reeves is filled with excitement about returning to portray the character, stating, “The ideas presented by Akiva and Francis are simply irresistible, and I can’t wait to reinterpret Constantine again!” Additionally, the sequel will continue the universe established in the previous film, with Francis Lawrence hinting that “familiar characters may have the chance to return.”
Currently, there is no filming schedule for the “Constantine” sequel. Please stay tuned for further updates.
