In the NBA Summer League, GG Jackson aims to shed the label of immaturity and position himself as a vital piece in the Memphis Grizzlies’ championship pursuit. Coach Tuomas Iisalo emphasizes teamwork, and Jackson is actively adjusting his mindset, hoping to contribute effectively alongside star players Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
The Memphis Grizzlies’ general manager, Zach Kleiman, is focused on reshaping the team’s style characterized by Resilience and Harmony. For Jackson, the Summer League is not just a chance to hone his skills on the court, but also a valuable learning experience. At just 20 years old, this young player is striving to secure his place in the team’s long-term plans after a tough second season marred by injuries. Despite being surrounded by trade rumors, Jackson must overcome external challenges to gain more playing time within Iisalo’s system.
If Jackson can translate his potential into actual game performance during the season, perhaps Kleiman and Iisalo will consider giving him a stable rotation opportunity. Unfortunately, the results of the 2024-25 season were less than satisfactory for both the Grizzlies and Jackson’s training. Jackson had a lackluster attitude on the sidelines during the play-in tournament, starkly contrasting with his dedicated teammates, and he missed the first game of the playoffs due to personal issues, ultimately missing the entire series and watching helplessly as the team was swept out.
In the 2025 Summer League in Salt Lake City, Jackson aimed to bounce back with an impressive average of 23.5 points and 4 rebounds per game, boasting a shooting percentage of 57.6%. These stats not only showcase his potential but also serve as a crucial indicator of the faith both he and the Grizzlies have in each other.
Jackson emphasized that the focus of the Summer League isn’t on statistics, but rather on the success of the team. He aims to showcase a more proactive defense and prove that he can contribute to the team’s victories, not just chase personal stats. This mindset shift marks a significant growth for him. During his rookie season, Jackson excelled, averaging 14.6 points and earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He carried that momentum into the Summer League, leading the Grizzlies to the championship game.
However, due to a foot fracture that affected his performance, Jackson’s statistics at the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League after his comeback weren’t as impressive as in Salt Lake City. Yet, on the court, he demonstrated improved decision-making and defensive potential. This rapid progress has significantly raised the coaching staff’s expectations for him.
Now recovering and healthy, GG Jackson is determined to prove himself as a reliable force on both offense and defense. Under the guidance of Coach Iisalo, he is beginning to confront the challenge of maintaining his aggressive offensive style while also focusing on teamwork. This competitive philosophy may well become the key to unlocking his full potential.
With Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. as the cornerstone of their team, the Memphis Grizzlies’ championship hopes may still seem slim. However, if they can enhance their versatility in scoring and strengthen their defense on the wings, Jackson’s development alongside rookie shooting guard Jaylen Wells could help the Grizzlies stand out in the competitive Western Conference.
