In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference first-round series, the Miami Heat faced the Cleveland Cavaliers at home but suffered a crushing defeat, ending the game with a scoreline of 87-124. This result not only plunged the Heat into a 0-3 hole in the series but also set the record for the largest losing margin in playoff history. Tyler Herro's performance was lackluster, while Bam Adebayo struggled with frequent turnovers, causing the Heat's team offense to collapse and their defense to fall apart. On the other hand, despite the absence of Darius Garland, the Cavaliers showcased their offensive firepower with a dominant display from beyond the arc, seemingly paving their way to the next round of the series.
At the start of the game, the Heat opened strong with a 12-4 run. However, under the brilliant tactical adjustments of head coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavaliers quickly reorganized their lineup and turned the score around in no time. The Heat's offense then hit a dry spell that lasted several minutes. Adebayo's series of poor passes not only disrupted their offensive strategy but also highlighted a lack of team coordination.
As the game progressed, the Cavaliers further extended their lead, while the Heat’s offensive chaos continued to worsen. By halftime, they were already trailing by 20 points. Faced with the Cavaliers’ intense defense, the Heat couldn’t find an effective way to counter, ultimately finishing the game with a staggering 37-point deficit. This also marked an embarrassing record of seven consecutive home losses.
Herro faced the Cavaliers' backcourt, which was missing Darius Garland, but shockingly delivered an unusually lackluster performance, scoring only 13 points. Despite his strong showings in the previous two games with 21 and 33 points respectively, his return to the home court was disappointing. The Cavaliers' defensive strategy effectively shut down his scoring chances from the perimeter.
Although Adebayo contributed to offense and rebounds, his overall performance was underwhelming with 6 turnovers. The Cavaliers' setup in the paint exposed the Heat's struggles with interior defense, forcing them to swallow this bitter defeat. Coupled with their overall rebounding disadvantage, it further highlighted the immense challenges the Heat are facing.
