The catcher dilemma for the San Diego Padres has caught the attention of fans, particularly with 34-year-old Elias Diaz, who has played in 47 games this season but only boasts a batting average of .218, with an OPS of .604 and a wRC+ of 75. Since his breakout in 2018, his performance hasn’t shown significant improvement, and his current fWAR stands at just 0.1. Defensively, his DRS reflects a troubling -3. On the other hand, 38-year-old Martin Maldonado, a former Gold Glove winner, has found himself in a hitting slump, managing only a .173 batting average over 31 games, with an OPS and wRC+ plummeting to 0.472 and 32, respectively, while his fWAR shows a -0.5 contribution.
In the fierce competition of the National League West, the San Diego Padres currently hold a record of 34 wins and 24 losses, just one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. While their overall batting performance isn’t remarkable, a +17 run differential still inspires the team, especially with top hitters like Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado on their roster. However, their catching lineup has become a weak link in their offense, affecting their competitive edge in the season.
In light of the issues surrounding the catcher position, the Padres might want to consider turning their attention to Luis Campusano. This 26-year-old player has shown impressive performance in the minors since being drafted in 2017, but his major league outings have not been up to par. Although he has only participated in 7 games this year due to injury and hasn’t been able to showcase stellar stats, Campusano’s defense, despite its ups and downs, could be a worthwhile option. The team needs to consider fielding players in better shape, especially since the contributions from Diaz and Maldonado are becoming increasingly unreliable.
The coach needs to wisely adjust strategies to give Campusano more playing time, rather than relying on underperforming veterans. If successful, this could lead to a stronger offensive lineup to tackle the upcoming challenges.
