The Texas Rangers are actively rebuilding their bullpen strength, and manager Bruce Bochy has admitted that there isn't a set closer at the moment, as adjustments will be made based on game situations. He emphasized the importance of a stable bullpen for the team's success, noting that how they manage the bullpen in the new season will be a crucial factor.
In a recent spring training game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, several relief pitchers had standout performances, ultimately leading the team to a 6-3 victory. However, compared to last year's championship-winning roster, the bullpen has undergone significant changes. Key closer Kirby Yates has switched teams, and José Leclerc has also joined the Oakland Athletics, necessitating a reshuffle of the relief lineup.
In light of this situation, the Rangers are making aggressive moves in the offseason, signing right-handed pitchers like Chris Martin, Luke Jackson, Jacob Webb, Shawn Armstrong, and Joe Barlow, while young rookie Marc Church is also drawing attention. On the left-handed side, Robert Garcia and Hoby Milner are expected to become solid assets, with Milner boasting an impressive career batting average against left-handed hitters of just .155, giving him a clear advantage.
Chris Martin is currently the frontrunner to take on the closer role, with 14 career saves under his belt and impressive control on the mound, boasting a K/9 rate of 9.27 and a walk rate of just 1.17. He demonstrates the ability to perform reliably in critical moments of the game. In a recent game, he dispatched three batters using only 15 pitches, showcasing his ideal form. Speaking about his role, Martin remains open-minded: "No matter where the coach places me, I'll do my best to help the team win."
On the pitching front, Jackson has a history of 19 successful saves and has recently delivered scoreless performances, showcasing his stability. Bochy mentioned that Webb's condition is continuously improving, while Church has recently clocked a 99 mph fastball, demonstrating his potential to become a key relief pitcher. Lefty Garcia is still sidelined with an injury, but the coaching staff has high hopes for him, anticipating that his recovery will strengthen the team's left-handed pitching strength.
As the new season approaches, the Rangers are still tweaking their bullpen lineup, and Bochy's flexible management will be a crucial factor in the team's late-inning performance.
