After the All-Star Game, the Lakers have showcased a stronger competitive edge, with the most significant change stemming from their defensive overhaul. While the addition of Luka Dončić has certainly boosted their offensive firepower, head coach JJ Redick has implemented a more targeted defensive system to address Dončić’s defensive shortcomings. Players like Jarred Vanderbilt, Dorian Finney-Smith, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, and LeBron James have played crucial roles in this system, rapidly elevating the Lakers’ defensive efficiency to the top of the league, reflecting their ambitions for the playoffs.
The Lakers’ new defensive strategy focuses on zone defense and mismatched guarding, contrasting the traditional switch-everything tactics. They flexibly adjust based on their opponents’ offensive style; for instance, against teams with strong penetration, they bolster interior protection, forcing opponents into more ball movement or difficult shot selections. Conversely, when facing teams that rely on outside shooting, the Lakers disrupt the opponent’s shooters through rapid rotations. This strategy leverages the versatility of their forwards, yielding solid results in limiting opponents’ scoring. However, the system isn’t flawless; against teams like the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, the Lakers’ defense has shown vulnerabilities. For example, once players like Jalen Brunson break through the defense, the team’s defensive cohesion is tested. Moreover, when up against small-ball lineups, the Lakers need to enhance their interior protection and rebounding control; otherwise, opponents can easily score through second-chance opportunities.
In addition to adjustments on the defensive end, the offensive efficiency of the Lakers has also become a key issue. While the combination of Dončić and LeBron James provides the team with stable offensive output, Vanderbilt’s outside shooting has still failed to put enough pressure on opponents, affecting the team’s spacing and overall offensive flow. Furthermore, if other role players cannot effectively make their outside shots, the Lakers’ offensive firepower will be further diminished.
With LeBron James back from injury, the Lakers are looking to find a better rhythm on offense while further tweaking their defensive strategies to adopt more flexible tactics against various opponents. Although the Lakers’ performance post-All-Star break has been impressive, to truly become a championship contender, they still need to enhance their consistency and ensure a balance between offense and defense as they prepare for the upcoming playoff challenges.
