The WTT European Grand Slam in Sweden is underway, and Taiwanese duo Cheng I-Ching and Chien Tung-Chuan are making their debut in doubles, facing off against Serbia’s Izabela Lupulesku and Sabina Surjan. Although they encountered some initial challenges, the pair ultimately triumphed, showcasing remarkable potential and synergy. Chien Tung-Chuan showed some hesitation early in the match, but Cheng I-Ching took charge of the pace, quickly seizing control with powerful forehand loops, and they secured victory in under 20 minutes. It’s worth noting that this partnership displayed formidable strength in their first match, but they still have room for improvement in their coordination, especially with Chien Tung-Chuan needing to adopt a more aggressive approach to support Cheng I-Ching’s offensive role.
In a subsequent match, Taiwanese athlete Kao Cheng-jui faced off against Korea’s Zhao Da-sung. The two engaged in a fierce showdown on the court, with Kao trying to adjust his strategy throughout the match, but ultimately, he fell short with a score of 1:3 against his opponent. In the early stages of the match, both players opted for tentative returns, but a mistake from Kao allowed Zhao to seize control of the game. Despite Kao’s attempts to employ various tactics, such as long serves and side cuts, frequent errors prevented him from seizing the momentum. In the end, he found himself on the defensive in the third and fourth sets, while Zhao capitalized on this and applied strong pressure, leaving Kao with no chance for a comeback.
In the women’s singles, Cheng I-Ching faced off against African champion Dina Meshref from Egypt in an exhilarating tug-of-war on the court. Cheng opted to adjust her strategy, utilizing more backhand responses to counter her opponent’s attacks. Their exchanges kept the match going for nearly 40 minutes, during which Cheng’s steady performance ultimately led her to victory, adding a touch of glory for the Taiwan team.
