Ahead of the NYCxDesign showcase, Herman Miller pays tribute to digital design masters with the launch of the all-new New Mexico series. This collection features two pieces inspired by Alexander Girard, Charles and Ray Eames, and American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Drawing inspiration from O’Keeffe’s home décor, the series includes a Girard-designed side table and a special edition Eames Wire Chair. These two limited-edition items were originally created by Herman Miller designers in the 1950s for O’Keeffe’s home in Abiquiú.
The Eames Wire Chair Low Base was a custom chair designed exclusively for O’Keeffe, featuring a molded fiberglass seat paired with a low metal base and a soft cushion. According to records from Herman Miller, O’Keeffe expressed her admiration for the chair in a thank-you letter, describing it as Compact and Comfortable. This bespoke design, which never appeared in Herman Miller’s product line, is now being introduced for the first time in a limited edition of 300 pieces. The cushion is adorned with vertical stripes in warm ochre tones, reflecting the natural hues of New Mexico’s landscapes.
In addition, Girard's design of the side table features a distinctive snake-shaped pattern. The white enamel surface, adorned with a black snake motif, becomes the visual focal point of the table. The supporting structure is crafted with outward-angled aluminum legs. While snake patterns often appeared in O’Keeffe’s home, this side table marks the first production model by Herman Miller, with a limited release of just 100 pieces.
Herman Miller's New Mexico collection is set to launch in North America soon, with the Japanese market expected to follow by the end of this quarter.
