Zara has announced that renowned fashion designer John Galliano has signed a two-year contract with the brand. However, this agreement does not position him as the brand’s creative director. Instead, Galliano will reinterpret Zara’s archival designs through seasonal collections. According to the company, Galliano will work with past Zara collections, deconstructing and reassembling pieces to create entirely new seasonal lines. The first collection under this partnership is expected to debut this September.
In 2024, John Galliano will step down as Maison Margiela’s creative director. Before this role, he served as the creative director for Givenchy and Christian Dior and founded his own namesake brand. Galliano, long regarded as a master of haute couture and high fashion, has surprised many by collaborating with Zara, a fast-fashion brand. Reports suggest the partnership stemmed from a conversation between Galliano and Inditex Group CEO Marta Ortega Pérez, who is also the daughter of Zara’s founder and Spain’s wealthiest individual, Amancio Ortega.
Since Marta Ortega Pérez assumed the role of CEO in 2022, Zara has collaborated with several high-fashion designers and industry heavyweights on one-off collections. However, this partnership with Galliano marks a more extended two-year engagement. In an interview, Galliano revealed that he has recently begun working through Zara’s archives.
The collaboration has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users are thrilled at the prospect of accessing high-fashion craftsmanship at an affordable price point. Others, however, argue that Zara’s archive consists largely of designs that mimic or replicate other brands, lacking true originality. In recent years, Zara’s prices have risen, with jackets often priced around $130 and leather jackets reaching approximately $315. Meanwhile, the brand has noticeably improved its quality and tailoring. As fast fashion’s popularity declines, Zara seems to be repositioning itself as a mid-market contender.
