Nike has joined forces with the cultural group Air Afrique to add new depth to the concept of Air. Air Afrique focuses on the cultural arts of the African diaspora, drawing inspiration from the now-defunct Afrique Airlines. Together, they pay homage to this history through the new sneaker model, Air Max RK61.
These bold formal shoes blend elements of sports and craftsmanship, with the upper design inspired by the Air Max Sunder, available in two color options: Coconut Milk and Black. But that’s not all; the lace zipper pulls are embossed with the Air Afrique logo, while the insole takes cues from vintage aircraft seating design, and the outsole even spells out Air Afrique in Morse code. As for the name RK61, it comes from the flight code RK of Air Afrique and its founding year, 1961.
