Omega Planet Ocean 2025 Fourth Generation Launch Celebrating 20 Years

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the OMEGA Planet Ocean introduces its fourth-generation design. Rather than simply continuing the legacy, it marks a fresh new beginning. The previous three generations of Planet Ocean consistently built upon the original prototype from 2005, amplifying its size and thickness, which cultivated a robust image of professional diving watches. However, this 2025 update nearly redefines the design of the Planet Ocean. The new model no longer relies solely on Thicker and more professional. to express performance; instead, it restructures its framework and proportions, clearly targeting a broader market and aiming to integrate high-spec diving capabilities into everyday wear.

Returning to its origins, the Planet Ocean was born in 2005 as an upgraded option above the Seamaster 300M. At that time, the 300M had already made a lasting impression due to its association with James Bond, while the Planet Ocean distinguished itself with an impressive 600-meter waterproof rating—twice the pressure resistance of the 300M—along with a more modern aesthetic and an early adoption of the Co-Axial escapement system, clearly marking its place in the high-performance category. For many, the first profound impression of the Planet Ocean came during the chase scene at the beginning of the film New Iron Man Takes Down the Royal Casino, where the watch transcended being just a prop; it became an integral part of the character’s essence and a pivotal moment for the series image.

Twenty years have passed, and the world of diving watches has undergone a transformation. Materials have matured, designs have become sharper, and professional timepieces are gradually blending into everyday life. The fourth generation of the OMEGA Planet Ocean was born against this backdrop. This new model retains the original 42 mm case size, but dramatically reduces the overall thickness from the third generation’s standard 16.1 mm to just 13.79 mm, cutting down by more than 2.3 mm. As a result, the feeling of weight and pressure while wearing it has significantly decreased. The flat sapphire crystal combined with a flatter ceramic bezel structure presents a more streamlined visual appeal, and the switch to a Grade 5 titanium screw-down case back not only contributes to its slimmer profile but also enhances structural strength, all while featuring the iconic seahorse logo detail that echoes the series’ tradition.

In terms of design, the new generation of the Planet Ocean unmistakably showcases a more refined aesthetic. The multi-faceted case lines blend seamlessly with shorter, converging lugs, ensuring that the 47.5 mm lug-to-lug distance fits the curves of the wrist beautifully during wear, creating a cohesive look and feel. The case’s silhouette exudes the robust energy of the Ultra Deep, and the broad ceramic bezel subtly echoes the tool watch language of the PloProf. The newly introduced dual-component stainless steel case, coupled with an inner titanium ring, enhances structural stability while giving sharper edge lines. At the same time, the long-standing helium escape valve has been officially removed, and the current collection features a no-date window design, leading to a more minimalistic and refreshing appearance for both the dial and the profile.

The watch face remains the most identifiable element of the Planet Ocean collection. Featuring a matte black dial complemented by three-dimensional hour markers and hollow Arabic numerals, it pays homage to the classic essence of the original design, while the newly redesigned numerals boast bolder, sharper lines. The orange variant with its 12, 3, 6, and 9 markers, paired with an orange ceramic bezel, stands out as a striking visual focal point; meanwhile, the blue and black styles present a more understated vibe. All hands, hour markers, and the bezel’s luminescent dots are filled with Super-LumiNova, ensuring clarity and direct readability in underwater or dim lighting conditions.

The brand-new bracelet and rubber strap showcase a transformation in the positioning of the Planet Ocean collection. The flat polished links mesh seamlessly with the brushed outer links, almost entirely integrating with the 21 mm lugs for a more unified visual appeal, while offering six micro-adjustments and a diving extension feature for enhanced comfort when worn. The rubber strap version features a streamlined integrated end-link design, enhancing the overall silhouette and providing greater flexibility in styling. The series is available in three colors: orange, blue, and black, with options for either a stainless steel bracelet or rubber strap. Notably, the orange ceramic bezel presents a significant manufacturing challenge, requiring repeated adjustments to the chemical composition and firing process, resulting in impressive color stability and durability, marking a standout technical highlight of the current era.

At its core, this entire series features the OMEGA 8912 Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement, which boasts automatic bi-directional winding and offers an impressive 60 hours of power reserve. Equipped with a Si14 silicon balance spring and a dual barrel structure, it has received METAS certification, meeting the highest Swiss watchmaking standards in terms of accuracy, anti-magnetism, and stability. This movement has already been utilized in specialized models like the Ultra Deep, and now it serves as a standard feature in the Planet Ocean collection, symbolizing a mature and comprehensive integration of technology within the series.
