The design inspiration for the new piece traces back to the 1930s with the Ref. 3646—this classic model was commissioned by Panerai for the Italian Royal Navy Special Forces and developed in collaboration with Rolex, featuring movements and cases supplied by Rolex. Some versions showcase a unique dial design that blends Roman and Arabic numerals, later referred to by collectors as California Noodles. This asymmetrical numeral arrangement enhances visibility, becoming a symbol of military watch functionality and aesthetic.
The PAM02088 preserves its iconic dial layout—featuring Roman numerals on the upper half, while the lower half showcases four Chinese numerals: four, five, Seven, Eight, embodying a new blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics.
