This morning (December 5th), at 11 AM Japan time (10 AM Hong Kong time), Toyota unveiled three sports cars in Tokyo. Yes, you heard that right, and I didn’t misspeak – these are indeed sports cars, featuring two street models and one race car; two powered by gasoline and one electric. They include the flagship of GR (Gazoo Racing) – the GR GT, the GR GT3 race car emerging from GR GTModification, and the Lexus LFA Concept.
GR GT
The GR GT, as the flagship of Gazoo Racing (GR), represents Toyota’s relentless pursuit of excellence. Crafted by a team that includes Toyota’s ace drivers Tatsuya Katoh, Hiroaki Ishibashi, and Naoya Kamata, alongside the race-loving Akio Toyoda and his son Daisuke, this machine embodies their passion for motorsport. The design philosophy focuses on creating a race car that can be legally driven on public roads, prioritizing a low center of gravity, lightweight construction, and high performance as the essential criteria for its development.
To achieve a low center of gravity, the vehicle’s height is minimized. It features an FR configuration with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The newly developed 8-speed transmission is positioned above the rear axle, ensuring a more balanced power distribution (45% front, 55% rear). Additionally, the driveshaft is made from carbon fiber, optimizing the center of gravity even further. As seen in the image below, the driver’s seat aligns with the engine and other components, fulfilling the fundamental synergy between man and machine. In terms of powertrain structure, it boasts a newly developed 4-liter V8 twin-turbo hybrid format, with a maximum power output exceeding 650 horsepower and torque reaching 850Nm, allowing for a top speed of over 320 km/h.
Toyota has invested heavily in controlling Weight. For the first time, the entire chassis is made from aluminum, while various parts of the body, such as the roof, hood, inner door panels, and rear end, are constructed with carbon fiber elements. This innovative approach ensures the vehicle is both lightweight and sturdy, resulting in the GR GT’s Weight being kept below 1.8 tons—standing at just 1,750 kg.
GR GT3
The GR GT3 racing car, developed based on the GR GT specifications Modification, is reportedly designed for both professional and amateur drivers alike. It features mechanical specifications identical to the GR GT, equipped with a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine and a rear-wheel-drive layout. Like the GR GT, it is also expected to be officially launched in 2027.
Lexus LFA Concept
As for the Lexus (凌志) LFA Concept, this is the Sport Concept Rebranding version that was showcased earlier at the Monterey Car Week, and it’s expected that the production version will be named LFA. This time, the company has also clarified that the car is an electric sports car, rather than the gasoline engine that many initially speculated it would be, thinking that a long hood automatically meant it had to be a petrol car; the final confirmation reveals it’s electric. While the exterior design of the LFA concept vehicle is highly refined, the specifications regarding its electrical components have not yet been disclosed. It’s believed that clearer information will emerge as we approach the production stage. When will production start? The company hasn’t mentioned anything from the beginning, and we hope it’s not just a pipe dream.
