Game developer Hideo Kojima recently shared some insights from his game development process, particularly focusing on the facial features of Asian individuals, especially women and young people. He believes that when creating CG models, smooth skin can hinder the sense of realism. In his new project Death Stranding 2: Above the Beach of the Dead, he has selected Japanese actress Shiori Kutsuna, who was raised in Australia, and successfully showcased the intricacy and beauty of Asian faces using cutting-edge technology, which has him excited for future works set in Japan.
In a recent release anniversary interview, Hideo Kojima candidly admitted that Asian skin poses numerous challenges when converting into CG models, particularly because the skin of young people is often too smooth to capture the details. He pointed out that this issue isn't limited to just Japanese individuals; the overall skin texture of Asians tends to be more delicate, which can often make CG models appear less realistic. In contrast, older individuals or those with freckles are typically easier to portray vividly, which explains why his previous attempts didn't succeed.
Hideo Kojima simultaneously emphasized the importance of language skills, mentioning that In Los Angeles recording studios, choosing Japanese actors requires fluency in English to ensure smooth communication with other performers. This criterion has made it challenging for him to find the right candidates. in Death Stranding 2 features Shiori Sudo playing the role of Renée (Rainy), who serves as the Asian representative among the main characters. Kojima noted that her performance was outstanding, particularly in how naturally and effortlessly she interacted with the other actors.
Born in Australia, Siki Kuno moved back to Japan at 14, and her language skills allow her to collaborate smoothly with English-speaking actors in recording studios in Los Angeles. Kojima has praised her talent, believing that her abilities have greatly benefited the team.
Regarding the development of Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima revealed the new technology he has been using, which finally allows him to present Asian faces to his satisfaction. He mentioned that the advancements in technology enable accurate depiction of unique features, including black hair. He is filled with hope for future collaborations and dreams of creating alongside more Japanese actors.
During the interview, Hideo Kojima hinted at the possibility of creating a work set in Japan. While nothing is confirmed yet, he expressed an open attitude towards this direction. Additionally, it’s worth noting that there is a cameo by Japanese director Mamoru Oshii in Death Stranding 2, where he plays a mysterious karate pancake chef. Furthermore, there’s a chance that Gen Hoshino, who is Gakki's husband, will also make an appearance in the film.
