With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the compatibility issues surrounding webcams have gradually come to light, with Logitech being the first manufacturer to confirm that its cameras support the new GameChat mode on Switch 2. According to recent reports, apart from the high-end Brio 4K model, all of Logitech's other webcams can be used directly with Switch 2 without any additional setup.
Logitech spokesperson Leila Lewis stated that aside from the Brio 4K, which features Windows Hello security, all other cameras work seamlessly on the Switch 2. Although some Reddit users discovered that downgrading the firmware can also make the Brio 4K compatible, this is not an officially recommended method and users must take on any risks that may arise from it.
When Switch 2 launched, many webcam manufacturers were still skeptical about its compatibility, and some well-received cameras couldn't function properly. Reports indicate that numerous companies hadn't even gotten their hands on a Switch 2 for testing, making it difficult for them to compete in the market, especially since this gaming console is flying off the shelves at record speed.
Nintendo seems to have not provided specific guidance on compatibility, forcing companies like Elgato and Ugreen to resort to reverse engineering to figure out the reasons behind the unrecognized issues, leading to confusion in the industry.
Elgato and Ugreen have explicitly stated that they will update certain camera models to support the Nintendo Switch 2, while Obsbot has confirmed that a firmware update will be released. Insta360 is continuing its research, and Anker's response has been rather vague, lacking a clear commitment.
The brand new GameChat mode on Switch 2 allows players to video call their friends while gaming, letting them see each other’s faces during gameplay. This feature requires support from compatible webcams, adding a whole new dimension to players' social interactions.
