Tesla has just launched the Model Y L, designed specifically for the Chinese market, and it has officially hit the mainland market. This new six-seat version boasts an exterior that is largely in line with the updated Model Y Jupiter, but it features an extended body thanks to the addition of a third row of seats, significantly enhancing practicality. Additionally, the interior configuration has been upgraded, offering an impressive storage space of up to 2539 liters.
While the exterior of the Model Y L is fundamentally similar to the revamped five-seat Model Y, you can distinguish them through several details. Look for the new Model Y L badge at the rear, the black Tesla emblem on the front trunk, and the newly designed 19-inch wheel covers, paired with front and rear tires measuring 255mm and 275mm respectively, making it easier to identify the latest model.
The main differences between the Model Y L and the refreshed five-seat version lie in their dimensions and interior space configuration. The new model stretches to 4,976 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm, significantly larger compared to the five-seat version, which measures 4,750 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. This increase in size translates to a more spacious interior and features a 2+2+2 seating layout. The new model comes equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering stronger performance and allowing for a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in just 4.3 seconds. According to CLTC testing, its range reaches up to 750 kilometers, approximately 550-600 kilometers according to WLTP standards, with an impressive drag coefficient of only 0.216 Cd, enhancing its overall range performance.
In addition, the Model Y L has introduced the CDC (Continuous Damping Control) variable damping suspension system, allowing drivers to automatically adjust the damping settings based on road conditions and driving modes, balancing both handling and comfort.
Internally, the cockpit's central control screen has been upgraded to a whopping 16 inches, with an enhanced resolution to match. The audio system has received a complete overhaul, now boasting 19 speakers—18 full-range and 1 subwoofer—ensuring an incredible sound experience. Every seat has been redesigned, with front seats featuring leg rests that are perfect for long-distance travel. The second-row seats are designed as Captain Chairs, equipped with heating and ventilation features, independent electric armrests, and dedicated air vents to boost passenger comfort. Accessing the third row requires navigating a central aisle, which, while not completely flat, is slightly raised, possibly making entry and exit a bit tricky. The third-row seats even come with heating functions and a Type-C charging port, catering to the needs of passengers.
The unique selling point of the Model Y L lies in its convenient 2+2+2 seating configuration. The second row features two independent Captain Chairs, which not only enhances the luxury of the design but also includes electric armrests, electric slide rails, and a maximum electric recline of 125 degrees, allowing middle row passengers to easily find their most comfortable seating position. When the third-row seats are stowed away, it boasts an impressive 2,539 liters of storage space, making it incredibly practical.
Based on the seating experience, the second row offers relatively spacious accommodation. Even for a reporter who is 171 cm tall, there’s still nearly a fist's worth of legroom left even when the seat is adjusted to its front-most position. Additionally, the vehicle's height has increased by 4.4 cm, providing ample headroom— it's likely that passengers over 1.8 meters tall can easily fit inside. In contrast, the third row experience is somewhat limited; the aerodynamic design of the Model Y creates a bit of a cramped feeling in terms of headspace. The seating is also somewhat slim, making it more suitable for women or children on short trips, as longer durations might lead to discomfort.
