Apple recently launched the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with a maximum output of 60W charging accessory, marking it as the world’s first product to support the USB PD 3.2 AVS protocol with the release of the iPhone 17 series. This charger features revolutionary adjustable voltage supply technology, providing performance close to some 60W chargers within its compact 40W design, although it is not yet available for purchase on the Hong Kong Apple official website.
The standout feature of this charger lies in its AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) technology. Unlike traditional chargers with a fixed voltage, AVS allows for precise voltage regulation, enabling better control of the charging process—especially when the battery is nearing its full capacity—resulting in more accurate management of charging power.
Thanks to this technology, the charging process has become safer and more efficient. As the battery approaches full charge, the charger gradually reduces the charging speed, while AVS technology optimally adjusts the voltage according to the device’s needs, enhancing charging efficiency and extending battery life.
For users of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, this charger is an essential accessory that unlocks its fast charging capabilities. According to Apple’s statement, the new iPhone 17 can charge up to 50% in just 20 minutes, and achieving this requires a charger that supports the AVS protocol.
It’s worth noting that while this is a 40W charger, it doesn’t actually match the performance of a true 60W charger. According to tests on Reddit, this charger can only maintain its maximum 60W output for about 18 minutes before it drops down to a steady 40W output. This design is perfectly suited for the quick charging needs of the iPhone 17, but it’s less ideal for devices that require prolonged high power output, like the MacBook Pro.
Currently, Apple’s charger is the only product on the market that supports the USB PD 3.2 SPR AVS specification, securing its lead in this emerging technology field. This charger is priced at $39 in the United States (about HK$304), and users can also choose to wait for other brands like Anker to release compatible USB PD 3.2 AVS chargers.
Although this charger is not yet available on the Hong Kong Apple official website, with the upcoming release of the iPhone 17 series, it is expected to quickly enter the Hong Kong market. The industry also anticipates that as the AVS protocol becomes more widespread, more third-party manufacturers will gradually launch compatible products, providing consumers with greater choices.
