Tesla has recently launched the highly anticipated entry-level electric vehicle, the Model Y Standard, starting at a price of $39,990 (approximately HKD 312,000). This new base model is about $5,000 (around HKD 39,000) cheaper than its predecessor. The new variant features a reduction in several configurations to keep the price in check while maintaining Tesla's flagship software technology and range capabilities. Deliveries are expected to begin between December and January next year.
The newly launched Model Y Standard version significantly cuts down on various features to achieve a lower price point. This includes the removal of front and rear LED light strips, a switch from a panoramic glass roof to an internal covering design, replacing leather seats with fabric ones, and eliminating components like rear seat screens, ambient lighting, and electric folding side mirrors. Additionally, the number of speakers has been reduced, and it only offers 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options paired with aerodynamic covers.
In terms of driving assistance systems, the new Standard version no longer includes the Autopilot feature that Tesla has always provided, with signature functions like Autosteer for lane keeping removed. Instead, only the basics remain, including ACC for adaptive cruise control, AEB for automatic emergency braking, and BSD for blind spot monitoring. Users who want the complete self-driving system can still purchase the Full Self-Driving (FSD) option for an additional $8,000 (approximately HKD 62,400).
When it comes to the battery, the capacity has been reduced from the larger standard version to 69kWh, which decreases the cargo space from 76 cubic feet to 74 cubic feet. Additionally, this model is only available in a single color—gray is offered at no extra charge, while white costs an additional $1,000 (approximately HKD 7,800), and black comes with a $1,500 price tag (around HKD 11,700).
It's worth noting that despite a simplified configuration, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y Standard still boasts an impressive range of 321 miles (about 517 kilometers), which is just slightly below that of the Premium version. The acceleration for the Model Y Standard takes 6.8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour, a bit slower compared to the Premium version, while its top speed remains at 250 kilometers per hour. The charging power is reduced from 250 kilowatts to 225 kilowatts, allowing for 160 miles (approximately 257 kilometers) of range with just 15 minutes of charging. This vehicle still retains access to the Supercharger network, automatic route planning, mobile app control, and all active safety features, delivering a software experience and charging capabilities that are on par with the higher-end models.
