Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that the long-awaited Minecraft movie sequel is set to be officially released on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess, who directed the first film, will return to the helm, collaborating with writer Chris Galletta on the sequel’s script.
Since its release in April 2025, A Minecraft Movie has performed exceptionally well, raking in $162 million (approximately HK$1.264 billion) at the box office in its opening weekend in the United States. Globally, it has grossed $312 million (around HK$2.434 billion). This achievement has shattered the record for the highest opening weekend for a film adapted from a video game in the U.S., surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which also featured Jack Black. As of the end of June 2025, the film’s total worldwide box office has reached $957.8 million (about HK$7.471 billion), making it the second highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, only behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.
This PG-rated adventure film has successfully captivated a large young audience, especially with the buzz generated online from the Chicken Jockey scene, which helped the movie maintain high popularity throughout the spring release window. The story follows a group of misfits who enter a block world through a portal, led on their adventure by Steve, portrayed by Jack Black. Warner Bros. has stated that the specific plot details of the sequel are still under wraps.
At the same time, Nintendo is actively preparing for a new installment of its game movies. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to premiere in the United States on April 3, 2026, produced by Illumination and building on the success of the first film, which grossed $1.36 billion globally (about HKD 10.608 billion) in 2023. The sequels of these two films highlight that game adaptations have essentially become a major box office guarantee in Hollywood.
