Facebook AI Mode Delivers Answers From Public Posts

    2026-06-18By Michael Choi
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Facebook AI Mode will answer users’ search queries by synthesizing information from public posts across Meta’s services, Meta said in a June 15 blog post.

Search, but without clicking through dozens of posts

Meta described the feature as a new AI search tab that uses Meta AI to answer everyday questions in natural language, rather than returning a list of links to individual posts. Examples the company gave include queries such as “where can I find good ramen” and “how much does an iPhone battery replacement cost.” Users can then follow up with additional questions to refine results.

Facebook AI Mode makes public posts an AI database

Meta said the answers will be generated from public posts on Facebook, Instagram and Threads, with particular emphasis on discussions inside Groups and content from Reels. The company said the responses do not point users to external websites, but instead summarize user-shared content on its platforms.

That change makes searching faster, but it also means material you shared in a public group or on a public profile could be extracted and shown as part of an AI answer for other people to see.

    What users should watch for

Meta emphasized that AI Mode only uses public content, and it will not pull from private accounts or private group posts, the company said in its announcement. Still, there are practical concerns about relying on condensed answers.

    1. Information can be out of date, for example a restaurant recommendation from years ago where the business has since closed.
    2. Context can be lost, because an AI summary removes the original post date, replies, and any corrections or disputes that accompanied the original entry.
    3. Source attribution can be unclear: a synthesized answer might draw on a firsthand tip, an emotional complaint, an expired promotion, or even a paid comment.

In short, Facebook AI Mode may speed up finding information, but it could make it harder to judge how reliable that information is.

AI photo and video editing features arrive alongside search

Meta also announced new AI image and video tools coming with the update. The company said the additions include suggested photos to share, new collage templates and transition effects, and AI photo presets that can alter clothing, hair styles and accessories automatically.

Meta told developers and users that these editing tools are optional, and that people can enable or disable the features at any time.

How Meta frames control and responsibility

In its June 15 post, Meta said the company is offering controls so people can opt out of AI-assisted features and adjust how their public content may be used. The announcement did not specify every detail of how sources will be cited inside AI answers.

Observers and some users have already raised questions about whether AI-generated summaries will preserve the original poster’s context and how Meta will label or attribute sources when multiple public posts are combined into a single answer.

Facebook AI Mode represents a shift in how social content is used for search, and the outcome will depend on whether Meta can balance convenience with clear attribution and information quality.
