As we approach the 20th anniversary of Constantine, fan expectations for a sequel seem to be rising. Recently, director Francis Lawrence and actor Keanu Reeves shared some exciting news on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, officially confirming that DC has greenlit the development of Constantine 2, with the script nearing completion.
Francis Lawrence has revealed that Akiva Goldsman is writing the script, and he co-created it with Keanu Reeves. The team currently has some “exciting ideas” and is confident about the sequel’s development. At the same time, he made it clear that “Constantine 2” will not belong to the DC universe managed by James Gunn, but will be categorized as “Elseworlds,” allowing this sequel to maintain its unique atmosphere and style.
Nonetheless, Francis Lawrence pointed out that the development process is facing numerous challenges, particularly due to changes in internal studio decisions, which have left DC’s darker characters, including John Constantine, in limbo for quite some time.
However, Keanu Reeves is passionate about returning to play the role, stating, “The ideas that Akiva and Francis proposed were irresistible, making me want to portray Constantine again!” Additionally, the sequel will continue the universe established in the first film, with Francis Lawrence hinting that “familiar characters may have the chance to return.”
Currently, there is no schedule for the filming of a sequel to “Constantine”. Please stay tuned for further updates.
