In a recent interview, Microsoft founder Bill Gates shared that today’s society faces a multitude of crises that go far beyond his youthful concerns about nuclear war. He pointed out that, in addition to the threat of nuclear weapons, the world now needs to tackle climate change, biological terrorism, pandemics, and how to effectively monitor the development of artificial intelligence (AI). He urges the younger generation to confront these issues head-on, as these challenges will directly impact the future of our world.
Gates candidly admits that what once occupied his concerns was solely nuclear war, but now he faces multiple challenges. He points out, “Back then, I mainly worried about nuclear war, but now I also have to deal with climate change, biological attacks or large-scale pandemics, and the risk of uncontrolled AI.” He particularly emphasizes that social division is becoming increasingly severe, a pressing issue that deserves attention, and young people need to stay vigilant. In his 2023 blog, he mentioned that with the addition of grandchildren in his family, he yearns to create an ideal world for the next generation. He states, “With grandchildren, naturally, I hope for a better future, whether it’s in politics, health, or climate issues.”
When it comes to the development of AI, Gates believes that while this technology carries risks, it can significantly boost productivity if utilized properly. He mentioned that the world is currently facing issues such as a shortage of medical personnel, limited educational resources, and difficulties in accessing information, and AI has the potential to help address these challenges. He pointed out, “We lack enough doctors, teachers, and sources of up-to-date information, and AI can help us access this knowledge at almost zero cost.”
Despite the numerous challenges ahead, Gates still believes that as long as humanity faces its problems head-on, the future will be brighter than the present. He emphasized, “Doing nothing won’t make problems go away automatically; if we work hard to solve them now, the future will surely be better.” Additionally, he mentioned that medical innovations are evolving rapidly, and there may soon be treatments for Alzheimer’s, obesity, and HIV, with the possibility of completely eradicating polio, measles, and malaria.
