Oklahoma City Thunder Draft Strategy and Key Historical Choices

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s draft strategy has always showcased a unique vision, particularly following their selection of Kevin Durant in 2007. In the ensuing two years, they picked Russell Westbrook at number four and later acquired James Harden, successfully crafting a core lineup that became known as the “Thunder Three.” This team made it to the NBA Finals in 2012, and although they ultimately fell to LeBron James and the Miami Heat, their potential was highly regarded. However, due to salary cap considerations, they chose to trade Harden to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, and draft picks, inadvertently losing a future MVP-caliber star and missing the chance to establish a dynasty. Today, the Thunder once again confront a critical decision regarding whether to re-sign players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, marking an important test of the management’s wisdom.

In 2007, during the selection process for Durant, the Thunder (then the Seattle Supersonics) seized a significant opportunity. The following year, in the 2008 draft, they selected Westbrook, and with the 24th pick, they added Serge Ibaka to their roster. These successful selections allowed the Thunder to continue growing their pool of young talent. In 2009, the Thunder’s draft showcased miracles once again, as they picked Harden with the third overall choice. At that time, the Thunder was truly unstoppable, brimming with potential.

The core quartet of the Thunder successfully reached the championship finals in 2012. Although they ultimately fell short of claiming the title, this young and promising team has a bright future ahead. Unfortunately, the management faced a split over the extension of Harden’s contract, as his salary demands did not align with the Thunder’s payroll situation. Ultimately, he was traded to the Rockets, marking a missed opportunity for the Thunder.

Under the Rockets, the offensive system centered around Harden quickly evolved. He not only elevated his average score per game but also earned multiple All-Star titles, establishing himself as one of the league’s top players and leading the Rockets to consecutive playoff appearances. Harden’s performance from the 2015-16 season to the 2019-20 season is undoubtedly one of the most exceptional offensive showcases in NBA history. Unfortunately, Harden’s peak coincided with the rise of the Golden State Warriors dynasty, thwarting his dreams of winning a championship.

In the subsequent trade that sent Harden to the Brooklyn Nets, the Thunder’s return felt a bit underwhelming. Kevin Martin’s performance with the Thunder couldn’t compare to Harden’s impact, and Jeremy Lamb fell short of becoming a reliable scorer. The only silver lining from this trade was Thunder’s later pick of center Steven Adams, who delivered consistent play during his time. However, this lone highlight only underscores the disappointment of the other losses incurred. In hindsight, the Rockets emerged victorious from this trade, while the choices and outcomes for the Thunder left many fans feeling a sense of regret.
