Produced by New Line Cinema, Mortal Kombat II, the highly anticipated sequel to the classic fighting video game, is set to hit the big screen this October. Continuing the style of the 2021 original, director Simon McQuoid returns at the helm, with renowned producer James Wan overseeing the project, ramping up the bloody and brutal combat scenes. This time, not only do all the original fighters make their triumphant return, but new characters are joining the fray, notably Karl Urban from the The Lord of the Rings series, who will portray the fan-favorite Johnny Cage. As one of the guardians of Earthrealm, he will join forces with fellow warriors to battle the formidable dark forces led by Shao Kahn.
The cast is truly stunning, featuring Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, and Damon Herriman among others. Chin Han plays a key antagonist, while Tadanobu Asano reprises his role as Raiden. Joe Taslim transforms into Bi-Han, facing off against Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, in a fateful showdown.
The story continues the epic conflict between Earthrealm and the outside world. With Shao Kahn launching a full-scale assault on Earthrealm, the arrival of Johnny Cage brings a game-changing element to the battlefield. As a fighting master and Hollywood superstar, Johnny Cage, with his agile movements and confident personality, joins forces with other warriors to defend the fate of the realm. The film promises a tighter pace and more intense battle scenes, exploding with visual shocks and a stunning exploration of violent aesthetics.
The behind-the-scenes team is equally impressive, featuring cinematographer Stephen F. Windon, production designer Yohei Taneda, editor Stuart Levy, and costume designer Cappi Ireland. The music, crafted by Benjamin Wallfisch, will further enhance the film’s tense atmosphere and dynamic action.
Produced jointly by Atomic Monster, Broken Road, and Fireside Films, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, this film is set to hit North American theaters and IMAX® on October 24, 2025, with international releases starting as early as October 22.
