The live-action film Sakamoto Days has officially been announced, with the launch of a new film website and dedicated social media accounts, bringing Yuto Suzuki’s manga of the same name to the screen. The first teaser poster released depicts a classic scene featuring Taro Sakamoto: the chubby assassin enjoying instant noodles while using chopsticks to fend off incoming bullets, vividly illustrating the striking contrast between everyday life and the sudden onset of violence, showcasing the unique dark humor style of the work.
Popular actor and J-pop idol Ren Meguro will take on the lead role of Taro Sakamoto, showcasing two different body types. The production team mentioned that the heavier look will combine special effects makeup and prosthetics, requiring about four hours of prep before shooting each day. This approach not only retains the character’s iconic physique but also allows Meguro to display dramatic physical contrasts on screen.
This film is directed by Yuichi Fukuda, with action scenes choreographed by Keiya Taguchi. Fukuda is widely praised for his skill in adapting manga into live-action films, having won fans over through the Gintama live-action series. As news of the live-action adaptation of Sakamoto Days broke, he became the ideal director in the eyes of fans. The movie is slated for release during the spring of 2026, coinciding with Japan’s Golden Week.
