Unknown Worlds said the Early Access launch will appear on the Steam store, and the Steam product page lists the PC release date and notes support for single player, online cooperative play, cross platform multiplayer, and Steam Cloud. Xbox Wire confirmed the title will arrive on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and ROG Xbox Ally, and that it will join Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on day one.
The most visible change for the franchise is the series first optional mode for up to four players in cooperative play. The original game built its atmosphere around solitary exploration, the sense of isolation when diving into an unknown sea.
Multiplayer could shift the rhythm of base building, resource gathering, and escape into a team experience, but the developer and players will be watching closely to see whether the cooperative structure keeps the franchise core feeling of beauty mixed with unease, or whether it dilutes that dread into a routine survival session.
PC Gamer reported that the game’s release follows months of corporate controversy involving the publisher Krafton and former Unknown Worlds management, including court filings about a $250 million bonus, schedule delays, and staff changes. PC Gamer also reported an episode in which a former CEO consulted an AI tool about contract language, a detail the outlet described as embarrassing.
Those disputes are separate from the software itself, and Unknown Worlds has emphasized that the Early Access build is an in development version. Players should judge the title on its day one state, rather than on company headlines, the studio said.
What to watch on day one
On Early Access day, three things will matter most: whether the new world still invites exploration, whether four player cooperative play feels natural rather than forced, and whether Game Pass players can join matches quickly and smoothly. Steam wishlist figures are notable, but the immediate test is playability and tone on launch day.
Unknown Worlds, Steam, and Xbox Wire are the primary sources for platform and timing details. PC Gamer is the source for reporting on the corporate dispute. Players who want hands on access should expect updates and patches during Early Access as the studio continues development.
